Honor Play 3 and Honor 20S Launch to Become Redmi Note 8 Challenger on Entry-Level Segment

Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor is releasing two new cellphones targeted at the middle and lower segments. The two cellphones are Honor 20S and Honor Play 3. Both of these Honor smartphones carry different specifications. Honor 20S is somewhat higher than Honor Play 3. It is positioned as the “lite” version of Honor 20, while Honor Play 3 is touted as a challenger to the Redmi Note 8 in the entry-level segment.

Honor Play 3

Honor Play 3 is targeted at lower segments than the Honor 20S. However, Honor is still confident calling this device a “gaming” flagship at a low price. The screen is stretched 6.39 inches with IPS LCD panel (1,560 x 720 pixels). The front of the Honor Play 3 looks similar to the Honor 20s thanks to the cameras which are both perched in the upper left corner. The Honor Play 3 selfie camera in the punch hole has an 8-megapixel resolution. On its back, there is triple cameras perch which consists of a 48 megapixel (f / 1.8) camera along with the 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view and a 2-megapixel depth sensor camera. The Honor Play 3 performance relies on the Kirin 710 combined with 4GB RAM and 6GB with 64GB to 128GB internal.

It is also supported by Turbo GPU technology which is claimed to have a strong performance for gaming. The battery has a capacity of 4,000 mAh with a 10W powered charger with a MicroUSB connector. In China, the Honor Play 3 starts at 999 Yuan for the 4 GB / 64 GB model. The higher model of  4GB / 128GB and 6GB / 64GB are sold at the same price, which is 1,299 Yuan.

The price of the Honor Play 3 is almost similar to the Redmi Note 8 that has just released. But, the Redmi Note 8 is better in the rear camera sector thanks to the quad-camera. Meanwhile, Honor Play 3 is better at the part of the screen that feels more spacious because of the camera design and water resistance with IP5X certification.

Honor 20S

Honor 20s is positioned in the middle class. The performance relies on Kirin 810, lower than the Honor 20 which is powered by the Kirin 980 chip. But for the screen size, both have the same span of 6.2 inches with full HD plus resolution. Honor 20S has three cameras, each with a resolution of 48 megapixels (f / 1.8), 8 megapixels wide-angle, and 2-megapixel macro lenses. At the front, there is a 32-megapixel selfie camera embedded similar to Honor 20.

The fingerprint scanner panel is embedded on the right side of the phone. There are two memory models available, they are 6 and 8 GB RAM with 128 GB of internal memory without expansion because there is no microSD card slot. The battery has a capacity of 3,750 mAh. Although the issue of blocking from the US government is still unclear, this Huawei sub-brand still relies on Android 9 Pie for Honor 20S which is coated with Magic UI 2.1.1. For the price, the 6 Ram with 128 GB RAM model is sold 1,900 yuan and 2,200 yuan for the higher variant. The colors that can be chosen are blue, white, and black.
