Hard drives and PC’s have been together for as long as I can remember. I remember when I was a kid and we had a computer that had a 10 GB hard drive and we all thought it was the biggest thing ever… how things change!
While standard hard drives have seen their prices plummet in recent years. Offering people, a lot more storage for a more affordable price than ever before. SSD (solid state drives) are becoming more and more popular. Not just in PC’s, but it is said that the next generation of video game consoles will make use of SSD instead of a standard hard drive.
Many people see the price of an SSD and after their eyes have gone back into their head, just buy a regular hard drive. Yes, the price for an SSD that is 1TB or over is far more than your standard hard drive, but an SSD has many great benefits some of which we are looking at now.
Speed: The speed that an SSD can deal with data is phenomenal. 35 to 100 microseconds is the speed of an SSD. To put that into perspective for you, that is the better part of 100 times faster than what a hard drive offers. If your PC operating system is on an SSD, you will notice your PC will run much faster.
Built To Last: I have had some hard drives that have lasted years, others have not been so lucky. A hard drive has actual moving parts and anything with moving parts is more likely to break down. An SSD uses flash memory and thus has no moving parts at all which makes it far more reliable than a hard drive.
Shh: I have used some noisy hard drives in my time I can tell you that for sure! An SSD, on the other hand, is whisper quiet thanks to it not having to rely on any moving parts at all. Some times a hard drive can be one of the noisiest parts of a computer so this is a very welcome bonus of an SSD.
Stay Cool: The lack of moving parts does not just make your SSD last longer and run very quietly. It also means that it will not run as hot as a regular hard drive does. Having one less thing in your PC or laptop that does not cause a lot of heat is always a good thing.
It Is Tiny: For the most part, an SSD is smaller than a standard hard drive. These days you are looking at 2.5 or 2.5 inches for an internal hard drive for your computer. SSD’s, on the other hand, are 2.5 inches at the most and many are actually 1.8 or even just 1.0!
What About Disadvantages?
I will not lie and say that everything is perfect with SSD’s just yet there are a few things to watch for. The most obvious one has to be the price. An SSD that is 1TB is very, very expensive anything over a TB is probably going to be out of most peoples price ranges.
I have to be honest and say that for me it is really only the price and the capacity that are negatives when it comes to an SSD. I am sure over time the price will come down greatly on these. What I can tell you is that when you have used a PC that has its OS on an SSD there really is no going back!
