Soaring Sales of CCTV cameras enhance danger to the privacy of US citizens

The need for CCTV surveillance in US is a technologically driver era that is a law enforcement mode. The video surveillance is of immense use to law enforcement and governments to monitor threats, maintain social control, and to investigate or avert criminal activity. It is important to highlight the fact that not only the governments are using, but it is also in certain areas that the residential communities are using CCTV cameras as a measure of creating safer environment.

The safer environment need has led to CCTV cameras soaring sales and now the US citizens consider it is enhancing the danger to privacy. However, fundamentally it opposes privacy groups and civil rights across varying jurisdictions that they express concern in the citizen’s surveillance that may result in limited personal freedoms.

The governing statutory laws and the video surveillance regulation in America regulate few aspects, while there are no federal laws virtually dealing directly with it. This indicates that the video surveillance includes constitutional doctrines and amendments affecting continuous surveillance.

Locational privacy is a novel and new aspect of privacy rights and it refers to the people’s right to move freely, without tracking their movements. However, with the CCTV cameras in public spaces it has a range of functions owing to the crime-fighting that it has become difficult for people to safeguard their privacy even in public spaces.

The cameras monitor human movements everywhere, in the streets, to all the spaces and gets into recording all the activities. The CCTV problem is with the human capacity of processing information, while the cameras are in fixed areas.

The fear of the U.S citizens is that these cameras can be given an authoritarian bent and the information may be misused to establish the movements of the people, associations, and political activities. This is the reason people do not robustly participate in democratic life, fearing they are watched or tracked with their movements.

The increase in the CCTV cameras is now a normal feature that keeps tracking the movements of people. Technology is now working as a silver bullet in the public spaces and the basic interventions is considered appropriate in risks and investigative reasons, but the same CCTV regulation has an impact on privacy issues.
