You’ve probably heard about Windows 10 S Mode. You undoubted have experience if you’ve recently bought a new Surface laptop. Don’t let the jargon scare you one single bit. There’s nothing at all to be afraid of. In fact, many of you will actually prefer S mode. We’ll talk about that a little later. This is just one of the many ways Microsoft has tried to level the playing field while competing with Apple. Yes, that’s what this is all about. Those who are familiar with iOS will certainly understand what S mode is all about.

What exactly is Windows 10 S mode?

It’s a security focused feature of Windows. You’re only allowed to install software located in the apps Store. There are also browser restrictions like only being able to use Bing. You will be restricted to what software you can use and you’re not allowed to execute command-line shells. The goal is to heavily restrict what the user can do on the computer. The theory is, if you’re actions are limited, then so will be the chances of something nasty happening. It sounds good on paper. The end result may be a user experience that’s lacking in features.

Who is S Mode perfect for?

S Mode is fantastic for those who don’t know their way around a computer. It gives them much less opportunity to mess things up. The same thing could be said about business users. Some may prefer S Mode on work computers to avoid any unwanted activities that could cause everything to come tumbling down. It all depends on who is using the computer and what the desired results are. Someone who likes being in total control of their computer isn’t going to like this one bit. An elderly person who is absolutely tech ignorant could easily benefit from Mode S.

What if you don’t like it?

Most people reading this will more than likely not install Mode S on their own. It’ll come already set up when you buy a computer. The good news is, you can remove Mode S for free. There’s one important thing you must know before removing it. You won’t be able to turn Mode S on after turning it off. It’s a one time thing. If you turn it off, then it’ll stay off forever. There is no way to turn it back on. If you’re on the fence about turning it off, then just keep it on. Make sure you’re 100% committed to keeping it off before making any changes.

What’s the thought process behind Mode S?

It’s pretty simple really. It’s Microsoft’s attempt at making a fool proof operating system. What they’re trying to do is make something rock solid that can’t be tampered with. It’s designed for the user who knows little to nothing at all about computers. It will solve the headache many users have when it comes to security problems that they face. While the average user may find it to be way too limiting. The fact that you can’t download and install anything other than what’s in Store will drive many users away from it. The limitations are too great for hardcore users and even intermediary users who casually spend time in front of the computer.
